Foot Note

Whilst researching the related article ‘The Clergy of Hargrave’ the following extract from ‘The History and Antiquities of Suffolk - Thingoe Hundred – John Gage Rokewode 1838’, was discovered.

On page 340/341

‘There are gravestones in the chancel inscribed Nicholas Trott, who died on the 11th April 1624; Francis Webb, rector of this parish, and Ellen his wife. Who died respectively on the 6th June 1755, aged sixty-four years and 23rd December 1735, aged forty-seven years; and Elizabeth, relict of Peter Laithbury, rector of Westow, who died on the 12th December 1728, aged seventy-seven years. The registers do not begin earlier than 1710.’

Whilst the gravestone of Nicholas Trott was recorded on the survey in June 2022, the memorials for Francis and Ellen Webb and for the widow Elizabeth Laithbury were not found. A recent further examination of the chancel of the church has uncovered the lower part of two laid stones adjacent to the altar which are partially covered by the choir stalls. We can only assume that the heads of these stones contain the missing inscriptions, as the possibility of them being uncovered in the short term is very unlikely.
